Description
The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 has caused a global recession and weakened the global climate momentum. On September 22, President Xi unilaterally pledged that China would scale up its NDC, peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This milestone for climate action reinvigorates global climate efforts, together with the EU’s Green Deal, upcoming NDC enhancement and “Next Generation EU” package to finance a green recovery. Pending the result of the U.S. election, the Biden presidency has also pledged a $2 trillion climate plan and intends to commit to climate neutrality by 2050.
According to the approved CCICED 2020-2021 Work Plan, the CCICED Climate SPS team will continue to gather our experts from China, EU, North America and other countries to share their invaluable insights on key issues related to carbon neutrality targets and pathway such as new economic growth, energy transition, financing and investment, in the hopes of providing related policy suggestions and supporting Chinese government on formulating climate policies and global climate governance.
This China-International Experts Joint Meeting will focus on how China and EU can: (i) adopt ambitious climate targets with fully–fledged implementation pathway and (ii) improve Europe-China climate cooperation in a new era.
