Being one of the Chinese scientists who initiated biodiversity research in China, Ma contributes a lot to Chinese biodiversity conservation. He initiated the establishment of Chinese Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network and organized 8 national symposia on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use together with Ministry of Environment Protection, State Forestry Administration, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education, WWF and TNC.
