China is facing severe air pollution. The main reason for China’s regional air pollution is abundant emissions and concentrated distributions of many air pollutants. China’s coal consumption is growing at the rate of more than 200 million metric tons per year and has accounted for more than 48% of the world total, whereas the population of motor vehicles also grew rapidly from 120 million to 190 million during the 11th Five-Year Plan. These two factors cause China’s emissions of primary particulate matter, SO2, NOx and VOCs to be more than 20 million metric tons. The emissions are mostly concentrated in Eastern China and result in deterioration of air quality in some areas such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta.
