Climate Adaptation for Waterborne Transport on Inland and Delta Waterways (Background Paper)

This CCICED Background Paper, “Climate Adaptation for Waterborne Transport on Inland and Delta Waterways: Using case studies on the Rhine and Yangtze Rivers”, which complements our Scoping Study on Climate Adaptation, highlights the urgent need to safeguard the continuity, reliability, and climate resilience of major inland freight corridors against worsening climate disruptions—including low-water droughts, extreme flooding, sea level rise, and multi-sector water competition—through a system-wide approach combining infrastructure adaptation, fleet modernization, digital decision-support systems, and coordinated governance.

The paper has been prepared as a background note in support of CCICED’s Scoping Study “Building a Climate-Adaptive Society” and the 2026 Annual General Meeting.
